As of Tuesday of this week, I'd taken exactly five hours of Czech language and gotten to know a lot of my NYU comrades. However, I'd not yet delved into the world of actual Czech culture until that night. I went to the National Opera with an NYU group to see an opera called The Bartered Bride. The plot was extremely cheesy: boy loves girl, girl loves boy, girl is being forced to marry someone else who turns out to be the boy's brother, hijinks ensue which eventually lead to boy and girl getting married. But the music was amazing. It was by a Czech composer named Bedřich Smetana, who is very much a big deal in the country.

After the opera, I took the tram back to the dorm and went out to a bar called Cross Club with three of my roommates: Lauren, Miranda, and Annie. Its a pretty crazy place; the entire club is filled with mechanical light fixtures and art pieces that move, along with a definite fog of smoke as soon as you walk in the door (people are allowed to smoke inside here still). It's only a 5 minute walk from the dorm, so it'll definitely be a regular hang out!
